Management Program Itinerary Welcome and Introductions Greg Stephens — Washington Savannah River Co., Chairman, Emerson Global Users Exchange Emerson Exchange Chairman Greg Stephens will officially open the conference at 8 a.m., welcome attendees and give a brief outline of conference activities and events. Greg has held positions in systems and facilities operations, network security, process automation, and plant engineering. He is currently the Manager of Process & Information Systems for Defense Programs. He holds a Bachelors degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Clemson University. Emerson Update John Berra — President, Emerson Process Management The Emerson Update will recap some of the key changes and accomplishments in the last year, look at the trends in both the process industries and automation technology, and convey what users can expect to see in the future. As the leader of the world’s largest process automation company, and having involvement in multiple industry groups, Mr. Berra is in a unique position to give attendees additional insight in these areas. Mr. Berra has contributed not only to the success of the companies he’s worked for, but also to the industry as a whole. He is currently President of Emerson Process Management and an Executive Vice President of its parent company, Emerson. In his days at Rosemount, he drove the development of the HART protocol. He was also an early proponent of an all-digital fieldbus and has served as the Chairman of the Board of the Fieldbus Foundation since its creation in 1994. He is a member of ISA and former member of the ISA President’s Industry Advisory Committee. And from 1988-1990 he was Chairman of the Board of the Measurement, Control & Automation Association. Mr. Berra has also received the Emerson Electric Technology Leadership Award, the Washington University Alumni Achievement Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society, and the Frost and Sullivan Lifetime Achievement Award. Keynote Speaker — Technology and Its Impact Jack Bacon, Ph.D. — Lead Systems Integrator for U.S. International Space Station Program Dr. Bacon will share insights on how ideas have become solutions for NASA and all participating countries in the International Space Station Program. He serves on the management team overseeing the construction and operation of the most complicated technical project in history: the International Space Station. A graduate of Caltech (B.S. 76) and the University of Rochester (Ph.D. ‘84) his extensive career includes roles in the development of many cutting edge technologies, including controlled thermonuclear fusion, the development of the electronic office and factory automation. He pioneered the deployment of several artificial intelligence systems, learning his craft at the famed Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. He was the United States’ lead systems integrator of the jointly-built spacecraft that forms the central bridge and adapter between all US and Russian technologies on the Space Station. This landmark in technological history was built in Moscow by American and Russian engineers and launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in November 1998. Among his numerous awards, he is a recipient of NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal and the Director’s Special Commendation. He routinely advises numerous academic programs and institutions, and he is a champion of education throughout the world. Dr. Bacon is an expert in spacecraft integration, aerospace systems architectures and currently works at the NASA Johnson Space Center. He is an award-winning author, whose book, “My Grandfathers’ Clock”, traces the development of technology and society through 28 known generations of his family, dating from medieval times to today’s permanent human presence in the cosmos. His second book, “My Stepdaughter’s Watch”, outlines a vision of how technology will impact the next fifty years. Using Lean Six Sigma to Uncover Opportunities Mr. Robert Crescenzi —NewPage Corporation This session explores how techniques like Six Sigma and lean production can be applied to a variety of processes to identify opportunities for improvement. Leaders will also learn how to make these thought processes part of a cultural change, to get your entire organization thinking about how you can reduce cycle time, reduce or eliminate waste, and be more efficient in everything you do. Robert J. Crescenzi joined NewPage in 2006 as Vice President, Business Excellence. He is responsible for implementing Industry Best Practices throughout the Company, including the Balanced Score Card and Lean Six Sigma methodology, achieving dramatic improvements in Customer Satisfaction, Quality, and Cost Reduction. His most recently held positions were with Standard Register as VP of Business Excellence and Compaq Computer Corporation as VP of Customer Satisfaction and Quality for the Enterprise Services and Solutions Group. In addition to Bob’s work experience, he served for six years as a Senior Examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and two years as a Judge for the International Benchmark Clearing House. He is currently a member of the Operation Management Advisory Council at the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. Building Advocacy & Presenting to Executive Management Dr. John Daly — University of Texas at Austin This session describes a series of specific skills business leaders can use to be more effective at advocating their ideas, and creating effective presentations for their executive management team. Having a good idea is not enough. Part of turning “ideas into solutions” is gaining support for your idea and “selling” it inside your organization. A major responsibility of leaders is not only to pitch their own ideas but also to sell the ideas of their people. Dr. John Daly is the Liddell Professor in the College of Communication, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Texas Commerce Bancshares Professor of Management and a Professor in Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on topics such as Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Behavior, Advocacy and Persuasion. He has won eleven different teaching awards while at The University of Texas. He also instructs programs on advocacy, customer service, communication, teamwork, sales management, and leadership for the University’s Executive Education and Executive MBA programs of the McCombs School of Business. He has published more than one hundred scholarly articles, and completed six academic books. He has served as President of the National Communication Association and on the Board of Directors of the International Communication Association and the International Customer Service Association. Deploying Technology and Managing Change Jon Minerich — Oliver Wight Consulting Group Once you have the support of your management, now all you have to do is implement it, right? Deploying technology is more than just installing the right equipment, there are numerous issues that need to be considered. These factors include transition plans, training people, potentially moving data from existing systems or capturing organizational knowledge. Managing a complex project in any organization can be a challenge. This session takes you through the proven approaches which can help you avoid the pitfalls and manage your projects to success. Mr. Minerich is the President and CEO of Minerich, Inc. He provides guidance on Strategy Deployment, Design of Agile Supply Chains, Sales & Operations Planning, Business Performance Assessments, and Process Improvement. Before becoming a consultant, Mr. Minerich had over 20 years experience in a wide variety of industries, where he held key positions from Plant Manager, Vice President of Operations, Chief Operating Officer, and President. In his various positions, he has been responsible for strategic supply chain agreements with companies in Asia, Europe, and the US. The companies he managed sold their products to over 26 countries worldwide. Jon has led improvement efforts through the proper integration of people, processes, and technology. Through his guidance companies have saved millions of dollars in many industries including pharmaceutical, biotech, chemicals and manufacturing. Mr. Minerich received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and his Masters of Business Administration from National University in San Diego, California.
